Artificial Intelligence (AI) is at the heart of the digital transformation currently reshaping business, government and society all over the UK. What’s more, as we reveal in our new report Accelerating Competitive Advantage With AI, there is now a direct correlation between an organisation’s use of AI technologies and its ability to retain a competitive edge.

But against a backdrop of political and economic uncertainty, are UK organisations doing enough to accelerate their adoption of AI and seize the opportunity to get ahead both domestically and internationally? And if not, how can they move from experimentation to implementation as quickly, effectively and responsibly as possible?

These questions form the basis of the report, which features the views of more than 5,000 leaders and employees from UK organisations as well as a variety of respected experts and commentators from the worlds of business, government and academia.

Among its key findings are:

• Organisations already using AI are performing an average of 11.5% better than those who are not – up from 5% in 2018.
• 56% of UK organisations are now using AI to some degree but just 8% of UK business leaders would classify their organisation as an advanced AI user.
• 74% of business leaders doubt the UK has the socio-economic structures in place to be a world leader in AI.
• To become truly AI-enabled, organisations must transform culturally as well as technically, empowering workers at all levels to use the technology effectively and ethically. 
  

As Microsoft UK CEO, Cindy Rose, writes in her foreword: “If the message of our 2018 report was ‘get started’, 12 months later it is ‘get serious’. Experimenting with AI in pockets is a great way to build capability and prove the potential of AI but, to deliver its full benefits, organisations need to move beyond experimentation.. There is now a clear link between an organisation’s full deployment of AI technologies and its ability to gain and retain a competitive edge.”
