Microsoft Whitepaper: Sustainability in German Industrial Enterprises, 2021

Using IT technologies to reduce industrial environmental impacts and strengthen business resilience

Sustainability - until recently considered an "add-on" or niche topic for specialized companies - is now becoming a key business priority in the manufacturing industry as the effects of climate change become more visible. The industry has always been characterized by its high energy consumption, global supply chains with massive emissions and a large volume of waste. At the same time, manufacturers are caught between demands from regulators and policymakers, changing consumer behavior and public opinion, and investors and industry-specific alliances. All these players are increasing the pressure to embed sustainability deeply into business strategy. And last but not least, manufacturing companies play a key role in the shift towards a green economy.

This white paper from IDC looks at examples of current sustainability measures in industrial companies and highlights the associated goals, challenges and success factors. A particular focus is on the potential of technology and digital tools for greater sustainability.

The content is based on a telephone survey conducted in April 2021 of 150 industrial decision-makers from German companies in the process manufacturing and discrete industries with more than 500 employees.
