Dyslexia DecodEd – Part 1

Today, dyslexia affects approximately one in five children, making it the most common learning difference among students. This language-based learning difference occurs in people of all backgrounds and intellectual levels, with the level of severity varying from person to person.

In this first session of Dyslexia DecodEd 2021, we’ll kick off this year’s three-part series with a global discussion from field experts, who will touch upon:

The challenges navigating dyslexia in our educational environments
The importance of building awareness about dyslexia
How dyslexia is an equity issue
The types of support and educational systems needed to help today’s students

Paige Johnson

VP Education Marketing, Microsoft

For more than two decades, Paige has led initiatives to transform and personalize education through the effective use of technology, both in the US and abroad. Paige is currently the VP Education Marketing at Microsoft. Before joining Microsoft, she was the CEO of EdCatalyst Group where she helped organizations design programs and products to improve education and learning. As the Education Strategist for Amazon Web Services, she promoted advances in cloud computing and data analytics to create more effective learning environments. Before that, she was the Education Strategist for Intel Corporation, where she collaborated with school systems around the world to help them build effective solutions to improve outcomes.

Shawn Anthony Robinson, Ph.D.

Co-founder, Doctor Dyslexia Dude & Reading Faculty, Madison College

Shawn Anthony Robinson is a full-time reading instructor at Madison College, a Senior Research Associate in the Wisconsin’s Equity and Inclusion Laboratory (Wei LAB) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a social entrepreneur, co-founder of Doctor Dyslexia Dude, former board member of the International Dyslexia Association, and serves on the inaugural advisory council of Benetech. Robinson graduated from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh (UWO) with a Bachelor of Science in Human Services, a Master’s in Education from DePaul University, and a PhD in Language and Literacy from Cardinal Stritch University. Robinson has over 40 peer-reviewed publications and received several distinguished honors throughout his early career such as: the 2017 Alumni Achievement Award/New Trier High School Alumni Hall of Honor; the 2016 Outstanding Young Alumni Award from UWO; and received “Educator of the Year” from All-State Insurance (Chicago) 2005. Robinson is also a Life Member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Coach Spencer Conley

Author, Motivational Speaker and Performance Coach

Spencer J. Conley is a former professional athlete, motivational speaker and author of the critically acclaimed Self-improvement gem, "Lead With L.O.V.E.'" His dynamic speaking style and powerful delivery has made him arguably one of the most prolific speakers of current times. His intense passion for people and genuine desire to see others succeed bleeds through in his work which has profoundly resonated with audiences from around the world.

Spencer Conley's program is both timely and necessary given that our future is intrinsically tied to our leaders of tomorrow. It's Conley's firm belief that by providing our youth with the tools needed for effective leadership, we secure a bright and prosperous future for generations to come. And, it is to this end that Conley works tirelessly to achieve.

Pamela Lougheed

Educator & Literacy Specialist

During Pam Lougheed’s teaching career she has supported students through a variety of roles; as a classroom teacher, resource teacher, early and late literacy specialist, and she has taught dedicated classes of students diagnosed with learning disabilities. Pam has expertise in delivering evidenced-based literacy intervention to students struggling with literacy skills, particularly those diagnosed with dyslexia. She continues to support students and their families through her private practice as a literacy specialist. Pam is a director on the Board of the Learning Disabilities Association of Alberta and is an active member of its Reading Advisory Committee. She has been the Manager of the Learning Disabilities & ADHD Network in Calgary, Alberta for the past three years

Michelle Perry

Special Education Advocate & Regional Leader, Decoding Dyslexia California

Michelle Perry is a Regional Leader for Decoding Dyslexia CA in San Diego, a special education advocate, and an attorney. She is also the parent of a child with dyslexia. She holds a Juris Doctor from California Western School of Law, a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from UC Riverside, and certificates in special education advocacy from the University of San Diego and William and Mary Law Institute of Special Education. Her work involves empowering parents, spreading dyslexia awareness, and ensuring that students receive the support they need within the education system.

Dr. Karina Quezada

Educational Psychologist, Program Specialist

Dr. Quezada is a bilingual educational psychologist serving students and families in Southern California. Her expertise includes psychoeducational evaluations of students with dyslexia and appropriate evaluations for language minority students. Dr. Quezada provides professional development to administrators and educators on topics related to dyslexia, ELL issues, special education law, and conflict resolution practices in special education. She has presented at the state and national level on topics addressing the academic gap for minority and special education students. In addition, Dr. Quezada is an adjunct faculty member teaching graduate level courses and impacting the next generation of school psychologists and school counselors.

Rachel Berger

Assistive Tech Specialist, Microsoft Education & Executive Director, Decoding Dyslexia Minnesota

Rachel Berger is the Executive Director of Decoding Dyslexia Minnesota, a nonprofit dedicated to educational advocacy, and is a passionate advocate for literacy and students with learning disabilities. In addition, Rachel is a learning disability assistive tech specialist for Microsoft Education, evangelizing, training, and supporting the assistive technology community. Over the course of her career, Rachel has been instrumental to numerous legislative and public policy initiatives around literacy and disability rights on the local and national level.
